Introduction/Background

"The Dolls' Journey to Eretz-Israel" by Abraham Regelson – an aliyah story for the young of all ages – describes the immigration of an American family from Cleveland to the pre-state yishuv, the Jewish community in the young Eretz-Israel of 1933.

Their three-year-old daughter Sharona had brought up her doll family to be conscientious Jewish dolls. But when her parents decided to make aliyah, the dolls had to be left behind in Cleveland with a friend. Yearning for their Imma Sharona, her stories, songs and Sabbath table, the dolls resolved to go on aliyah themselves to seek her, reliving the family's hardships and adventures on their journey by land, sea and air.

For those who have made aliyah and for those contemplating aliyah, this English translation as "The Dolls' Journey to Eretz-Israel" of the Hebrew book "Masa HaBubot l'Eretz-Israel" by the author's daughter Sharona, (the original "Imma of the dolls") is a great holiday/birthday/Bat Mitzva gift idea. And boys too, those who love reading a good story, full of fun and humor, will delight in this Bar Mitzva gift as well. Israel's foremost songwriter, the late Naomi Shemer, declared in a radio interview that this book was her most-loved childhood read, and told how she would laugh aloud through countless re-readings.

Today Sharona Tel-Oren is a great-grandmother who lives in Israel's Negev, and offers her free lecture/presentation "A Historic Tale of a Unique Aliyah" in English or Hebrew throughout Israel, about this classic Hebrew book, its author and its times. .

Her father, the renowned poet/author Abraham Regelson, whose Hebrew, English and Yiddish poetry and prose were published in both America and Israel, had received important literary prizes in both countries, among them Israel's Brenner and Bialik Prizes and NYU's Hebrew Department's Neuman Prize for his contribution to Hebrew literature. Those interested in reading other works by Regelson will find much of his writing in the website www.benyehuda.org.

His well-loved Hebrew children's classic,"Masa HaBubot l'Eretz-Israel" which first appeared in the children's weekly supplement of the newspaper "Davar" in Tel-Aviv in 1934, was published in book form in 1936, and in five subsequent editions was a best-seller for 50 years. After that, for a long time it became almost impossible to find, though dealers in rare books claimed it to be one of their most requested items. The present edition includes Sharona's Prologue and Epilogue containing much historical and family background, as well as illustrations from past editions by artists Nahum Gutman, Aryeh Navon, Bina Gevirtz and others. The verses were translated by Sharona's older sister, Naomi. Upon the re-release of both the Hebrew and English versions, the book has been included in the Israel Ministry of Education's "March of Books" project to foster quality reading, and it also appears in the educational website of the Jewish Agency as a recommended book to inspire Jewish identity and love of Israel in the young.

In the past it was read in installments on Israel Radio's "Children's Corner" program, and was presented as a musical in Kibbutz Yagur on the occasion of its sixtieth anniversary in 1985. Recently, in 2009, Jerusalem's Karon Theatre featured a presentation based on the book. And several sixth-grade classes in different parts of Israel celebrated the end of their grade school years with fine dramatic performances of this fanciful aliyah story.
